James Earl Jones (January 17, 1931–September 9, 2024)

James Earl Jones was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi in 1931 during the Great Depression.  In his childhood, Jones struggled with a stutter that would lead to him becoming mute for 8 years of his life.  A high school teacher encouraged Jones to begin reading aloud the poetry that he had been writing.  Reading his poetry aloud was the impetus that Jones needed to overcome his stutter.  Jones would go on to become an actor known for his instantly recognizable deep, baritone voice in movies, television, and on the stage.  Throughout his long career, Jones would earn a number of accolades.  He was one of a small number of performers to have earned the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tonys, earning him the EGOT title.  Explore this resource guide to learn more about the life of James Earl Jones and his iconic roles.
